The lava lamp craze of the 1960s and 70s wasn’t just about the classic Eddie Bernacotti designs. Dig deeper, and you’ll find surprising variations from smaller manufacturers that didn’t get the same attention. These oddball lamps often had unique features or eccentric designs that set them apart.
Most collectors focus on the big names, but lava lite store specializes in hard-to-find models from lesser-known brands. Their inventory includes gems that even serious collectors might not recognize. If you’ve ever wanted to explore beyond the usual fare, these are worth knowing about.
The upside-down lava lamp obsession
One strange trend from this era was the inverted lava lamp. Unlike traditional models where wax rises to the top, these lamps had their heaters at the top instead of the bottom. The effect was mesmerizing – massive blobs would slowly ooze downwards through clear fluid. Companies like AstroLight and Groovy Creations experimented with this design throughout the 1970s.
The biggest challenge with these inverted lamps was temperature control. Manufacturers had to carefully calibrate them to prevent overheating or irregular wax movement. Many failed spectacularly within months, which is why intact examples are so rare today.
